About Us

History

Founded in the late 1800s, Wooden Cross Cattle Co. is located in South Central Kansas just west of Hillsboro. The fifth generation of Schlehubers is now active in the cattle business. From seedstock production to starting calves and managing them to harvest, our family has always been in the cattle business. It is important to us to do business in such a manner that will ultimately build long-lasting partnerships based on actually doing what we say we will do. Through good and bad times we measure our success not by our bottom line but by trying our best to do good business and continually adding to our list of friends and customers.

Philosophy

In all of creation the cow is the most efficient of all creatures. She has the ability to freely walk rangeland harvesting forage not palatable to humans and turn it into the best-tasting, most-nutritious consumable protein known to man. We will not produce cattle that will compromise the purpose and natural efficiency of production females. Working with nature's plan, we strive to produce females that are sound in structure, efficient, fertile, with good udders and milk to raise their calves on their own. Fully understanding the constantly changing needs of the consumer, we work to provide our customers with genetics that will capture added value in the sale ring as well as carcass premiums on the rail but we will not cross the line that would compromise the maternal values of our females.

Our Herd

We have tested our Charolais genetics (in herd) on 300 head of commercial Angus females. One third of these females were bred to our calving ease Charolais sires as virgin heifers with extremely satisfactory calving success.

Our objectives were to demonstrate calving ease, vigor, favorable weaning and yearling growth, maternal value of the Charolais – cross female in the commercial herd as well as sale ring and carcass premiums. Customer feedbacks representing many different commercial herds over a wide area of the country confirm the same results.

Our Charolais females are moderate, easy fleshing and very maternal. The udder quality is excellent and they are sound in structure. Fertility and production value is proven. We feel we are producing the ideal Charolais genetics for the cattle industry at just the right time.

We now more then ever feel confident in growing our Charolais base to better provide both our commercial customers as well as other seed stock producers the genetics that have worked so well for us.
