About Us

History

Founded in the late 1800s, Wooden Cross Cattle Co. is located in South Central Kansas just west of Hillsboro where the fifth generation of Schlehubers are now active in the cattle business. From seedstock production to starting calves and managing them to harvest, our family has always been in the cattle business. It is important to us to do business in such a manner that will ultimately build long-lasting partnerships based on actually doing what we say we will do. Through good and bad times we measure our success not by our bottom line but by trying our best to do good business and continually adding to our list of friends and customers.

Philosophy

In all of creation the cow is the most efficient of all creatures. She has the ability to freely walk rangeland harvesting forage not palatable to humans and turn it into the best-tasting most-nutritious consumable protein know to man. We will not produce Charolais cattle that compromise the purpose and natural efficiency of beef production. Working with nature’s plan, we strive to reproduce females that are sound in structure, easy doing, fertile, with good udders and milk to raise their calves on their own.

Our goals are to duplicate and continue to improve our females overall maternal values for our own replacements and also to provide these positive traits to other registered breeders. Most importantly we will work hard to raise the kind of bulls that will add value at weaning, yearling, or all the way to harvest for our commercial customers. We understand that you are in the cattle business to make money and we will provide you the kind of cattle that will help you get that done.

Our Herd

The favorable “bottom line” results that we have experienced over the years using our Charolais bulls on commercial cows has brought us the confidence that we needed to continue building our Charolais female base. As a closed herd, we are growing internally paying very close attention to the details that have brought us to the quality of Charolais cattle that we are known for today.

We are able to provide large groups of bulls to our customers that help them improve the consistency of their calf crop passing along the traits that are most important to each individual producer. We are also in the process of moving rapidly towards proving efficiency and carcass merit in our Charolais cattle through dna markers and actual harvest data. We feel that this data in combination with EPDs and in herd indexing provides our customers with the most accurate and useful information available when comparing our bulls to our competitors stock as well as our bulls in herd to each other.

We will continue to believe in what we actually see, not in what someone tells us that we see. The “next new best thing” will not influence us but rather we will steadily build our herd, our program and our customer base built on the proven and sound common sense fundamentals of efficient beef production.

Welcome

We welcome you to our website as well as welcome your calls or visits anytime. I believe that given the chance to talk the Charolais cattle business with you we would be able to add you to our list of customers and friends. Please consider our program when looking for Charolais genetics.

Thank you.
